The present study compares populations of small mammals in larger isolated forest complexes with populations living in small woods and windbreaks. The aim was to compare both types of habitat and to evaluate their importance for the quantity and diversity of small mammals. Seen through the perspective of basic ecological characteristics, there was no significant difference in relative abundance and equitability between the observed types of habitats, however their diversities differed significantly. The species diversity was higher in small woods and windbreaks due to the occurrence of a higher number of types of open habitats, which results from the ecotone character of these habitats.
