This contribution concerns the evolution of saturation caused by antecedent and causal precipitation and its influence on the flow of the Vltava river in Prague. From this point of view the situation before the flood in 2002 was compared with that in 1890 and 1897 when floods were caused by nearly the same amounts of causal precipitation in the Vltava river basin. However, those events markedly differed in evolution of the river basin saturation. Especially, by comparison the events in 2002 and 1897, the influence of antecedent river basin saturation is evident. Further, this article concerns findings that process of flood events can be described by means of index API30 values both before and during the precipitation episode.
