Improved and verified rotating device generating hydrodynamic cavitation (RDGHC) is inspired by so called cavitation heaters. The force and cavitation efficiency of the device is adjustable and can be modified for selective removal of cyanobacteria from water, while algal growth and metabolic activity is not affected. Known published devices using hydrodynamic cavitation need several cycles to reach cyanobacterial elimination (12-200 cycles, 5-200 min of treatment) while this device can remove 99% of cyanobacteria after one single cycle within 0.1 min. Effect on cyanobacterial removal was synergically enhanced by addition of trace concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (45-100 µM H2O2) what is 10-1000 times lower than that used in previous studies. Device can increase and modify temperature, what is additional advantage in potential technological applications. We discuss the potential use of this device in a broad spectrum of technological processes and especially its combination with hydrogen peroxide, ozone, or e.g. ferrates, what can open new areas in enhanced advanced oxydation technologies or as an alternative to sonochemical, microwave assisted or electrochemical processes in chemical engineering where large volumes of liquid have to be treated.
