In a strong magnetic field the effect can be utilized that the electron gyro-radius is much smaller than that of the ions. This method was developed by Katsumata and Okazaki. The Katsumata probe head usually consists of cylindrical collector moveable within the metal shielding tube. The tube axis is perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. During the measurements the collector was hidden inside the shielding tube and biased by the swept voltage. Than the exponential fit of the decay of the ion current provides the perpendicular ion temperature. A new kind of the robust Langmuir probe, the so-called segmented tunnel probe, was designed for the parallel ion temperature measurements.
