Till now there is no systematical study about surface active substances (SAA) present in freshwater lakes. Literature is focused on marine environment only. Natural SAA consist of extracellular residues from phyto/zooplanktone as polysaccharides, lipids and proteins. During experiment with artificially created and naturally emitted methane bubbles from sediment in the lake with substantial presence of phyto/ zooplanktone we have found that bubbles with diameter from 1 mm to 12 mm rose with velocity of clean bubbles over distance several meters. This is in contrary with the method to identify SAA in natural waters proposed by Zawala et al.(2007). The effect of bubble expansion and desorption/absorption of gases is analyzed via modelling. The effect of SAA on gas-liquid transfer during methane ebullition from lake can be considered negligible then. Conversely one can assume enrichment of lake surface with SAA and gas transfer of dissolved gases through lake surface will be reduced.
