The measurement principle is based on a modified capillary rise method, when the temperature of only the upper part of the elevated liquid column is rapidly changed and stabilized [1]. This allows conducting the experiments under the supercooled metastable state, i.e. under the equilibrium freezing point temperature. Recently, the apparatus allowed to obtain the surface tension data for ultrapure water at extreme degree of supercooling exceeding 31 °C [2]. Unlike previous measurements, new data show a more pronounced deviation from the IAPWS standard for the surface tension of ordinary water extrapolated
into the supercooled region [3]. This finding partly supports the results of recent molecular dynamics simulations predicting an anomaly in the temperature trend of the surface tension of water at low temperatures close to the homogeneous ice nucleation border. In this work, the experimental apparatus was slightly modified in order to measure the surface tension of lowconcentration
binary aqueous mixtures with ethylene glycol and sodium chloride at temperatures from +30 down to -27 °C. Verification measurements under the stable conditions from 10 to 60 °C were carried out with the Wilhelmy plate method. The new data for surface tension of water + ethylene glycol show remarkably good agreement with the correlation by Wang et al. [4] including its extrapolation into the supercooled region. In case of water + sodium chloride, the correlation by Dutcher et al. [5] provides reasonable representation of the experimental surface tension including the supercooled state at concentrations up to 10 wt%. However, some deviation can be observed at higher concentrations.Pracoviště Ústav termomechaniky Kontakt Marie Kajprová, kajprova@it.cas.cz, Tel.: 266 053 154 ; Jana Lahovská, jaja@it.cas.cz, Tel.: 266 053 823 Rok sběru 2023 Elektronická adresa https://www.atpc2022.org/
