The world's tropical forests are becoming increasingly fragmented, with many of these fragments taking the form of strips adjacent to rivers. We explored whether these riparian strips allow "spill-over" of ants and dung beetles into nearby oil palm plantations, hence maintaining ecosystem functioning. We found evidence for spill-over of dung beetles, but not ants, and no evidence that these changes affected dung processing rates. This limited ability of forest species to penetrate oil palm plantations demonstrates the importance of maintaining habitat connectivity in human-modified tropical landscapes.
