We study mitochondrial DNA diversity of human populations from both sides of the Sahara Desert, i.e., both from North Africa and the Sahel/Savannah belt. Our results are based on huge number of 7213 mtDNA sequences collected from 134 African populations together with 470 newly secured samples from geographical regions of low coverage. The analyses are based on both descriptive methods and Bayesian statistics. Apart from the HVS-1 sequences, we completely sequenced 26 samples from sub-Saharan populations belonging to Eurasian haplogroup N1. Our results indicate that maternal gene flow must have been important in this circum-Saharan space, not only within North Africa and the Sahel/Savannah belt, but also between these two regions.
