El número π es uno de los números más conocidos a nivel popular. Una de las características que más se suele poner de relieve es su irracionalidad, pero es difícil encontrar fuentes en las que, aún siendo de manera resumida, expliquen la demostración original de este hecho, demostración llevada a cabo por primera vez por J. H. Lambert en Mémoires sur quelques propriétés remarquables des quantités transcendantes, circulaires et logarithmiques (1761/1768). La mayoría echan mano de demostraciones más sencillas como la de Legendre o la de Niven, pero en ningún caso explican la demostración original ni los pasos que da el autor en las demás páginas de su artículo, entre los que encontramos por ejemplo la primera distinción moderna entre irracionales algebraicos y trascendentes. El interés suscitado por el problema de la cuadratura del círculo, por otro lado, es milenario, y Lambert en Vorläufige Kenntnisse für die, so die Quadratur und Rektifikation des Cirkuls suchen (1766/1770) aborda el tema de manera divulgativa y sin entrar en demasiados tecnicismos, pero dejando clara la pérdida de tiempo que supone para el que lo intenta. Lambert, una persona poco propensa al quedar bien, es directo y sarcástico, con lo que leer el texto es en algunos aspectos como leerlo a él. Esta publicación es una unión entre técnica y divulgación, y en lo que a los propios textos de Lambert se refiere, la primera en presentar su traducción anotada (la primera del francés y la segunda del alemán). A mayores, este libro permitirá dar a conocer mejor al propio Lambert a través de un estudio biográfico debidamente contextualizado, un científico que a pesar de haber realizado investigaciones clave en ramas como la física, la cosmología, la filosofía, la lógica o las matemáticas, ha quedado en un segundo plano en relación a otros dieciochistas.

The number π is one of the most popularly known numbers. One of the characteristics that is most often highlighted about it is its irrationality, but it is difficult to find works that, even in a summarised form, explain the original demonstration of this fact, a demonstration first carried out by J. H. Lambert in his Mémoires sur quelques propriétés remarquables des quantités transcendantes, circulaires et logarithmiques (1761/1768). Most of them make use of simpler demonstrations such as Legendre’s or Niven’s, but in no case do they explain the original demonstration or the steps taken by the author in the rest of his article, among which we find, for example, the first modern distinction between algebraic and transcendental irrationals. The interest aroused by the problem of squaring the circle, on the other hand, is millenary, and Lambert in Vorläufige Kenntnisse für die, so die Quadratur und Rektifikation des Cirkuls suchen (1766/1770) addresses the subject in an informative way and without going into much technicalities, but making clear the waste of time it entails for those who attempt it. Lambert is direct and sarcastic, so that reading the text is in some respects like reading him. This publication is a combination of technique and popularisation, and as far as Lambert’s own texts are concerned, the first to present his annotated translation (the first from French and the second from German). In addition, this book will allow us to get to know Lambert through a contextualised biographical study, a scientist who, despite having carried out key research in fields such as physics, cosmology, philosophy, logic and mathematics, has remained in the sidelines in relation to other eighteenth-century scientists.
