Hepatic hematopoiesis is prominent during fetal life and declines around birth. We have investigated whether mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) could be used as a marker of this process in human neonates. UCP2 expression was high prenatal and declined after birth, while being expressed in liver macrophages. UCP2 is a novel marker for the development of macrophages in developing liver.
