Our previous studies have shown that peptide mixtures separated from protein digests, as well as individual synthetic peptides are capable of significantly delaying the onset of apoptosis that occurs spontaneously at the decline phase of cell cultures (Franek et al., Biotechnol. Prog.18:155 (2002), Biotechnol. Prog.19:169 (2003)). The characteristic feature of the action of small peptides (two to six amino acid residues) on hybridoma, cultures was the millimolar concentration range needed to achieve significanFchanges of culture parameters. The observed favourable effects of peptides could not be explained by improvement of cell nutrition, because mixtures of free amino acids, constituting the peptides, did not exert comparable effects. The variety of peptides tested for their anti-apoptotic activity in mouse hybridoma cultures was now extended to peptides containing non-coded amino acids and D-amino acids. The apoptotic index Al (i.e. apoptotic cells / total cells) in control cultures at day 6 was (46+-4)
