92 students from Gdansk University in Poland, who lived their formativeyears during an authoritarian rule in their country, Q-sorted 48political culture statements [designed to represent civic cultureparadigm] and ranked two sets of Rokeach values [instrumental andterminal]. The results were analyzed using Q-analysis procedures. The analyses revealed that the Polish student elite gave the strongestpreference to the "civic" political culture. This result wasinterpreted as supporting democratic tendencies beyond what might havebeen expected in a post-communist society. However, the analysis alsoyielded schemata with prevalence of "rebelliousness" and "alienation"which may suggest susceptibility to demagogic movements during periodsof social and economic crisis. The students also endorsed "ascetism"and "worldly egotism" from the sphere of terminal values, and "hippylifestyle" and "rugged individualism" from the area of instrumentalvalues.
