Michael Sandel je stoupencem aristotelského přístupu v pojetí ctnosti a otázce obecného dobra. Když v roce 1982 vyšla jeho kniha Liberalism and the Limits of Justice, stal se známým kritikem Rawlsova liberalismu a představitelem komunitarismu. Ve své poslední knize Tyranie zásluh: Kam se podělo obecné dobro? Sandel analyzuje některé negativní důsledky globalizace narušující obecné dobro a ukazuje, že je nutné přehodnotit to, jak je přispívání k obecnému dobru posuzováno a odměňováno. Sandel kritizuje americký kult úspěchu a v souladu s M. Weberem ho spojuje s tradicí protestantské etiky. Systém vzdělávání a meritokracie upevňuje rostoucí nerovnost, která společnost rozděluje na vítěze a poražené, a polarizace společnosti se stává hrozbou pro demokracii.

Michael Sandel is a proponent of Aristotelian understanding of virtue and common good. After his book Liberalism and the Limits of Justice appeared in 1982, the author became a well-known critique of Rawls´ liberalism and an adherent of communitarianism. In his latest book The Tyranny of Merit: What´s Become of the Common Good? Sandel analyses some negative effects of globalisation concerning the common good, and the resulting necessity to re-evaluate how contributions to the common good are judged and rewarded. Sandel criticises the American cult of success, and following M. Weber he connects it to the traditions of Protestant ethics. Rising inequality is consolidated by the system of education and meritocracy, dividing society to winners and those who lose out, and the polarisation of the society is a threat to democracy.
