Mortar beds of four late 19th‐century mosaics from the Czech Republic and one mosaic from Austria were investigated using scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS), differential thermogravimetry (DTG), X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier‐transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) to search for common materials’ features supporting the hypothesis of their origin in the Austrian workshop of the Neuhauser company. A significant similarity of mortars from three Czech (Prague) mosaics was found. They contained 12–21 wt% linseed oil. Their technology was based on traditional 17th‐century recipes. Their Austrian origin seems highly probable. Two remaining mortar beds differed not only from the Prague mosaics but also from each other.
