In this contribution, we present results of novel explicit finite element approach for accurate modelling of elastic wave propagation in periodical one-dimensional layered bars. Standard approaches in explicit time integration of the finite element discretized system produce dominant spurious oscillations of stress distributions. By meaning of the local stepping process, the stress spurious oscillations are eliminated and the time scheme is suitable for accurate modelling of elastic wave propagation in heterogeneous media using the finite element method. The presented time scheme is tested in elastic wave propagation in a layered bar with two different materials.
