Kapitola se zabývá temporálním užitím vinylové nahrávky v jejích technologických a kulturních aspektech. Kapitola se nejprve věnuje dopadům nové technologie ukládání času na hudební estetiku, zejména tak, jak je vylíčil ve svých pracích Theodor Adorn. Poté kapitola popisuje taneční a hudební subkulturu northern soulu a její uchopení fonografické technologie. Kapitola dochází k závěru, že případ northern soulu poukazuje na absenci deterministických vztahů mezi vynálezem nové technologie a její artikulací v rozvoji nových kulturních technik.

The chapter discusses the temporal uses of vinyl record in its technological and cultural aspects. The chapter begins by considering the implications of the new technology of time-storage to musical aesthetics, especially as expounded in the writings of Theodor Adorno. Next, the chapter describes the dance and musical subculture of Northern Soul and its appropriation of phonograph technology. The chapter concludes that the case of Northern Soul demonstrates the non-deterministic relationships between the invention of a new technology and its articulation in the development of new cultural techniques.
