In this chapter we discuss the traditional system of land use on the island, which is characterized by its lack of fire in the process of transforming the rainforest into an agroforest. This process is described in detail, with reasons why we consider this to be a sustainable tradition in the wide range of indigenous practices of shifting cultivation in Southeast Asia.
