The paper examines the academic career of a world-known Czech mathematician Jaroslav Kurzweil (born in 1926). Author shows how the Czechoslovak-Polish contacts in mathematics enabled the Kurzweil’s intership in Poznan in 1953 and how the impact of at Władysław Orlicz helped him to completed his postgraduate period. Jaroslav Kurzweil was able to successfully combine his research with organizational activities in the Mathematical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He conducted the famous Thursday seminars on differential equations and organized the EQUADIFF conferences. The author argues the postgraduate period was formative for Kurzweil and opened new Czechoslovak-Polish cooperation also for other mathematicians from this generation.
