Algal organic matter (AOM) has been reported having significantly lower trihalomethanes (THM) formation potential in comparison to other natural organic matter (NOM). However, simultaneous interaction between AOM and NOM and their competition for chlorine and bromide have not been sufficiently addressed. Thus, this paper investigates how AOM affects chlorination of other NOM and its impact on THM formation. AOM has shown to prevent bromide incorporation and eventually reduce brominated THM species. Having high organic-N content, AOM probably consumes free chlorine forming combine chlorine and hence alters the bromide incorporation and brominated disinfection by-products formation.
