This study provides a detailed introduction - both systematic and historical - into the doctrine of inferentialism as it has been elaborated over the last three decades by Robert Brandom and fellow inferentialists. It reconstructs its main sources of inspiration, central questions, theses and methodological approach. It also reviews the main lines of criticism that it has received. Relatedly, it articulates a number of open issues that is raises to be addressed in the future research.
