Překládaná kniha je stěžejním dílem politické teorie švýcarsko-francouzského spisovatele a politika Benjamina Constanta (1767–1830). Constant v ní zvažuje důsledky Francouzské revoluce pro politické myšlení. Toto dílo obsahuje zásady, které autor později rozvinul ve svých spisech a které hájil v praktické politice. Constant zde reflektuje Montesquieuova Ducha zákonů, kriticky se vypořádává s Rousseauovým spisem O společenské smlouvě a navazuje na ekonomickou teorii A. Smithe. Překlad je pořízen z rukopisné verze knihy (1806), kterou Constant v době jejího vzniku nemohl z politických důvodů vydat. Kniha vyšla poprvé až v roce 1980. Tato verze vyvrací pochyby ohledně jednoty jeho myšlení a potvrzuje Constantův zásadní význam pro politickou teorii klasického liberalismu. Překlad obsahuje poznámky autora i překladatelky (věcné), rejstřík a bibliografii.

The translated book is the key political work of the Swiss-French political writer and politician Benjamin Constant (1767–1830). Constant considers here the impact of the French Revolution on political thought. The work contains principles that Constant developed further in his later works and that he defended in his political career. He reflects here on Montesquieu’s Spirit of the Laws, critically analyses Rousseau’s Social Contract and develops the economic theory of A. Smith. The present publication is the translation of the manuscript version of the book (1806) that Constant could not publish at the time due to political reasons. The book was published for the first time in 1980. This version of the book removes doubts about the unity of his thought and confirms him as a key representative of classical liberalism. The translated book contains the notes of the author and the translator as well as index and bibliography.
