The development of plans for the expropriation and expulsion of Germans
from Czechoslovakia can be interpreted as a history of the subversion of
the liberal principles of citizenship and property rights. The thesis put forward
in the chapter is that thevery radical solution based on ethnically-defined
collective guilt was chosen as late as spring or summer 1945 and was not
a direct reaction to „German brutality“ against the backdrop of Lidice and Ležáky,
as the popular narrative maintains. At the same time, the chapter brings to light
contradictions, and political instrumentality, in both the construction and application
of ethnically based inequitable legislation on the part of one segment of the population of
    the Czech lands.
