In this chapter are described ecological conditions of development of toxic cyanobacterial waterblooms in nature, their monitoring, the sampling strategies and methods of investigation. In the taxonomic part are included all types of cyanotoxin producing genera with description of all toxin producing cyanobacteria and short description of individual toxins. The chapter includes the methods of identification according to modern polyphasic principles and the recent methods of studies of toxic cyanobacteria are shortly described. The chapter contains the list of relevant literature and the appendix with methods for testing phytoplankton distributions.
