3D terrestrial laser scanning is a relatively new surveying technique. The survey yield a digital data set, which is essentially a dense point cloud, where each point is represented by a coordinate in 3D space. It’s a non-contact, non-destructive technology that digitally captures the shape of physical objects using a laser beam and is ideally suited to the measurement and inspection of contoured surfaces and complex geometries which require massive amounts of data for their accurate description and where doing this is impractical with the use of traditional measurement methods. We can find benefits of using laser scanning as a technique in mining/geotechnical practice and research: roadways deformation, volume analysis and monitoring, detailed and large-scale topographic mapping, tunneling, rock face surveying or digital outcrop mapping etc. Therefore the 3D laser scanner was used to monitor the coal mine roadways and pillar stability in room and pillar panel trial in the Ostrava-Karvina coal basin at CSM Mine. Laser scanning was used for analysis of rib movement, floor heave and roadways deformations as a whole. It is a unique application within coal mining, where acquired experience will be used in other complex monitoring systems, especially with the elimination of negatives that scanning brings.
