Kapitola popisuje složitý vztah mezi pomístním názvem Šumava a jeho denotátem. V dlouhé historii diskuse o způsobu přístupu ke správě největšího českého národního parku, který ve svém názvu nese toponymum Šumava, je klíčovým spor o fundamentální charakter prostoru, na němž se toto chráněné území rozprostírá. Podstatné je v tomto sporu samo definování významu anoikonyma Šumava. Jeho denotát je totiž v současném, stejně jako i ve starším úzu, nejasný. Na základě analýzy korpusu mediálních textů o Šumavě z let 1991–2010 odhaluje rozličné koncepty, které se na jednotku Šumava v diskurzu o Národním parku Šumava vážou. Zaměřuje se na to, jaké komunikační funkce mohou tyto koncepty v diskurzu plnit, zejména pak na to, jaký je vztah mezi texty publicistického žánru, jejichž autory jsou přímí aktéři diskurzu, a texty zpravodajskými, jejichž autoři primárně nezastávají vyhraněná názorová stanoviska, a dominantní koncepty proto potenciálně pouze reprodukují. Kapitola tyto konceptualizace konfrontuje s různými definicemi Šumavy, které vyplývají z textů současných i historických encyklopedií či beletrie (tedy s texty stojícími vně diskurzu o Národním parku Šumava), a popisuje, jaké dopady na diskurz o Národním parku Šumava tato významová ambivalentnost má.

The chapter describes the difficult relation between the anoikonym of Šumava (Bohemian Forest) and its denotation. In the long history of the discussion on the approach to the administration of the largest Czech national park, which bears the notion of Šumava in its name, there has been an essential dispute over the fundamental character of the environment covering the protected places. What is cardinal in the dispute is the very definition of the anoikonym of Šumava. Its denotation has been, to wit, unclear, both in the present, and in the past. On the basis of the corpus analysis of the media texts on Šumava from the years 1991–2010, the text discovers various concepts linked to the unit of Šumava in the discourse on the Šumava National Park. It focuses on what communicative functions these concepts may acquire in the discourse, namely on what arelation there is between the texts of opinion journalists who are direct agents in the discourse, and the texts of unbiased journalists who do not hold any particular views and who thus only refer to dominant concepts. The chapter confronts these conceptualizations with various definitions of Šumava, which stem from both contemporary, and historical encyclopaedias and fiction (i.e. with the texts outside the discourse on the Šumava National Park), and describes what impacts are brought about by this semantic ambiguity on the discourse on the Šumava National Park.
