Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a public health problem inendemic European and Asian countries. Recently, Caraccioloet al. reported a case of persistent TBE virus infection of animmunosuppressed patient in Italy. The patient had a persistentviraemia and was shedding the virus in urine for over two months. In our unit we annually admit 80–100 TBE cases. Throughoutthe years, we have managed several cases of TBE in individuals withvarious degrees of immunosuppression, few of them with surpris-ingly mild, yet some quite severe illness. One case is of particularinterest because of its dramatic course due to immunosuppressiongiven during the viraemic phase of the illness.
