We designed and constructed a laboratory device for the residence time distribution (RTD) experiments with packed bed microreactors. The device was design in a flexible way allowing an easy modification of the microchannel length and the size of packing particles. In this work, we dealt with hydrodynamics interactions between solid phase and liquid in static unstructured systems. In experiments, we used packed bed reactor with channel length between 25 and 150 mm and variable channel-to-particle ratio. The size of spherical glass particles was 2.4 mm and channel diameter 3.0 mm in this case. For determination of the residence time distribution (RTD) we used the dye tracer method. To improve the RTD acquisition system the two-tracer monitoring was used during measurements. In parallel, CFD simulations of corresponding device geometry were performed. For the verification of the output signal depending on the arrangement of the particles in the reactor, simulations were performed for two different particles geometrical configurations. Obtained results were compared with experiments and conclusions about effects of microreactor set up were discussed.
