Complex growth patterns of bacteria on solid agar were studied. The colonies were found to be not self similar objects, contrary to what was previously believed. Their two-fold fractal structure was revealed. Two different mechanisms governing the patterns formation below and above a certain critical scale were specied. A scenario of a colony development is suggested.
