Algal organic matter (AOM) is present in many drinking water sources. Phytoplankton releases it into water as cellular organic matter (COM) upon cell lysis. It often affects the performance of drinking water treatment and the quality of water (exertion of coagulant demands, membrane fouling, disinfection by-products precursor). Together with humic substances it is classified as a natural organic matter (NOM). Adsorption of the first onto granular activated carbon (GAC) has been extensively described in the literature. However, a limited number of studies about adsorption of AOM is available. The objective of this study was to evaluate a GAC suitability for removal of COM isolated from Microcystis aeruginosa, one of the most abundant cyanobacterium in the drinking water sources.
