The article explores the connections between human rights politics and efforts to reshape collective identities based on critically reconsidered national historical canons in the 1970s and 1980s democratic opposition in East Central Europe. The first part discusses various “civic patriotism” conceptions, the second one explores emerging contradictions in the political languages of the opposition during the 1980s.
