Příspěvek se zamýšlí nad specifikami židovského osídlování Palestiny v období od konce 19. století do 40. let 20. století při využití odborné literatury, publikovaných pramenů a archivních materiálů. Upozorňuje na řadu paradoxů spojených s pronikáním evropských Židů do Palestiny, které byly podmíněny sociální skladbou a názorovou orientací osadníků. Zdůrazňuje mimo jiné skutečnost, že ve výsledku vyčlenění palestinských Arabů z židovské společnosti standardizovala politika sjednocené sionistické levice, opětovně poněkud paradoxně vzhledem k jejím ideovým kořenům. V neposlední řadě příspěvek předkládá zasazení obrazu meziválečného sionistického hnutí do kontextu tehdejší židovské pospolitosti.

The struggle over land tenure and the issue of the nature of Jewish settlement have been among the evergreens of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for more than a century. Taking into account the Zionist emphasis upon immigration and land acquisition, one has to be puzzled by the relatively modest results accomplished in both domains until the mid-1930s. The current essay ponders the complexity of attitudes towards the Jewish settlement as they existed in Zionism (both in and outside Palestine) until the 1940s and earmarks the odd position of the Zionist movement in the Jewish world of that time. Further on, the essay underscores the significance of the unique approach employed by the Zionist Labor movement, combining, as it did, the national struggle with a social conflict, for the inter-communal strife of the first decades. This approach is compared with the political stands adopted by other (interwar) Zionist factions.
