Tato studie vychází z konstatování, že se historici sociologie dostatečně nezabývají otázkou, jak a jakou historii sociologie pěstovat. Naopak bohatě rozvinuté odpovědi na takovou otázku najdeme v historiografii (přírodních) věd, jejíž propojení s historiografií sociologie je proto v této studii v některých jeho aspektech sledováno. K emancipaci historie sociologie a k jejímu sblížení se s historií (přírodních) věd vyzýval svého času Robert K. Merton, na jehož postřehy a návrhy je snad možné nově navázat. Inspirován Mertonem, ale také G. Canguilhemem a L. Althusserem, klade autor této studie zvláštní důraz na otázku, jakým předmětem se má historie sociologie vlastně zabývat, stejně jako na nezbytnost kritiky sociologického textu.

This paper proceeds from the assertion that historians of sociology don't feel concerned enough with the question of which history of sociology it is worth to develop and how to do it. By the contrast, historiography of (natural) sciences is in this respect very prolific. The interconnection between the two historiographies, that of social sciences and that of natural sciences, is the general theme of this study. In his time, Robert K. Merton was inviting historians of sociology to come closer to historians of sciences, and to emancipate their field from the concerns of the current sociological theory. Reconsider Merton’s invitation, as it is claimed in this study, would be beneficial. The works of Georges Canguilhem and Louis Althusser are thereafter recalled in order to stress two more particular issues: the salutary reflection about the very object of the history of sociology, and the necessary critique of sociological texts.
