DNA amount analysis has clearly pointed out that C. album has evolved by hybridization of a diploid and a tetraploid species, the identity of which is unknown. Hexaploid species have thus most probably arisen from a fusion of two unreduced gametes: one from a diploid and the other from a tetraploid species.
