After birth the rat littermates enter the presuckling period (initial 6 hours terminated by the first nursing). After this stage the suckling period follows and the youngs are fed by maternal milk only. The suckling period is closed by the first intake of solid food on postnatal day 17. In this day the weaning period starts, the rats are fed both mother milk and increasing dose of solid food. The weaning period ends by the last intake of maternal milk (postnatal day 28)
