Kniha Podoby textologie se věnuje třem zásadním etapám v historii novočeské textové kritiky: zaprvé období přelomu 19. a 20. století, v němž textová kritika postupně získávala odborný rámec a kdy současně dochází k prvním máchovským edičním sporům, zadruhé době sporů o míru aktualizace textů novočeské literatury a o zásady ediční práce ve 30. a 40. letech a zatřetí éře poválečných bezručovských polemik s těžištěm mezi roky 1960-1963, jejichž výsledky se promítly i do norem ediční práce, jak je ustavovala příručka Editor a text (1971). V literárněhistorické analýze se autoři snaží nahlédnout dobové teoretické projevy, vlastní edice, recenze a polemiky zejména z perspektivy rodících se možností pro dobový kontext, pokoušejí se přistupovat k jednotlivým otázkám nikoli jako k čemusi hotovému, ale jako k stále otevřené problematice, čímž v druhém plánu poukazují na podnětnost mnohohlasí různých edičních přístupů a koncepcí, a to i pro dnešní ediční praxi. Tyto tři úseky dějin oboru jsou představeny současně v samostatně komponovaných částech komentované antologie, která přináší texty z hlediska disciplíny dnes již "klasické" i dosud (v případě bezručovských materiálů) nepublikované.

The publication Podoby textologie (Forms of Textual Criticism) considers three fundamental stages in the history of modern Czech textual criticism. The first period was from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth, when textual criticism was gradually given a professional framework and also when the first disputes arose iver the editing of the manuscripts of the Czech Romantic poet, Karel Hynek Mácha (1810-1836). The second was the period of disagreements over the extent to which the texts of modern Czech literature should be brought up to date and about the principles of editing in the 1930s and 1940s. The third period was the disagreements in the 1960s over editing of the Slezské písně (Silesian Songs, 1899-1900) of Petr Bezruč (born Vladimír Vašek, 1867-1958), which reached climax in 1960-63. The consequences of the disagreements of this last period are manifested in the rules set out in Editor a text (1971). In a literary-historical analysis, the authors consider contemporaneous theoretical opinions, editions, reviews, and debates, chiefly from the perspective of the nascent opportunities for period context. They also endeavour to approach the individual questions not as something set in stone, but as open to discussion. This also means that they can demonstrate the inspiration offered by the variety of editorial approaches and conceptions also with the eye to contemporary practices. The three parts of the history of the discipline are presented in the individually composed sections of the commentated anthology, which comprises not only texts from the perspective of a discipline that is now "classic" but also hitherto unpublished texts (the Bezruč material).
