Cílem knihy je systematizovat historické vědění o teoretickém a obecně metodologickém dědictví americké sociologie v kontextu jejího intelektuálního a institucionálního vývoje. Kniha je strukturována do 5 kapitol věnovaným 5 různým etapám: počátkům americké sociologie, meziválečnému období, poválečnému období takzvaného "zlatého věku", radikální sociologii konce šedesátých let a současnému vývoji. Celkově vzato, nejde o vyčerpávající shrnutí dějin americké sociologie, nýbrž o historické kontextualizace identifikující hlavní směr vývoje a nejdůležitější oborové debaty v každém z uvedených období.

The aim of the book is to systemize historical knowledge about theoretical and general methodological legacy of American sociology in the context of its intellectual and institutional development: The book comprises 5 chapters concentrating on 5 different periods: the origins of American sociology, the interwar period, the post-war period of the so-called "golden age", radical sociology of 1960s, and contemporary developments. Taken together, the book does not provide an exhaustive account of the history of American sociology but presents historical contextualization identifying the main course of the development and the most important disciplinary debates in all periods under study. The history of reflections on theory and method in a specifically formed American sociological discourse is dissected, together with the issues of institutional development and formation of academic culture.
