Studie tematizuje základní filosofické problémy spojené s žánrem románu. V návaznosti na jisté historické koncepce jsou vyčleněny dva hlavní směry v myšlení tohoto žánru a stanoveny hlavní okruhy problémů. První tendence zdůrazňuje formální otevřenost žánru, zatímco druhá klade do centra román jako výraz přítomnosti. Cílem studie je ukázat, že obě tyto tendence je třeba držet při sobě, pokud nemá být otevřenost vnímána jako příznak arbitrárnosti a pokud nemá být přítomnost chápána jako uniformní, homogenní celek. Nakolik vztahujeme obě tendence k sobě, stává se zřejmější, že formální otevřenost je ve skutečnosti uspořádána tak, aby zachytila přítomné, a že teprve z hlediska románu se přítomnost plně vyjevuje jako "komplikovaná" či vnitřně diferencovaná.

The essay focuses on key philosophical problems related to the genre of novel. Following some historical conceptions the author singles out two basic tendencies that characterize the theorizing of this "literary form" and uses them as a ground for elaboration of his own questions. The first tendency emphasizes the formal openness of the genre while the other conceives novel as an expression of the present time. The aim of the essay is to argue that the two tendencies must be held together in order not to perceive the openness as a pure arbitrariness and in order not to perceive the expressed present as an uniform structure. As far as we hold the tendencies together it might become clear that from the perspective of expression the formal openness is precisely configured to "capture" the present and, on the other hand, that only from the perspective of novel the present can be fully perceived as complicated or differentiated in itself.
