Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) represents a powerful non-invasive technique for visualization of anatomical structures in vivo. The method is commonly used in diagnostics for the examination of human beings but also for the detailed studies of animal models in biological research. Nowadays the resolution of MRI clinical scanners is close to 1 mm3 and can be further improved by the use of contrast agents. The silica coated nanoparticles of perovskite manganite La1-xSrxMnO3 are very promising for MRI as the T2-contrast agent. Their magnetic properties can be precisely adjusted in order to achieve extraordinarily high spin-spin relaxivity r2. The silica shell enables both colloidal stability in water and suitability for biological studies. The potential of perovskite manganite La1-xSrxMnO3 for MRI is presented on the dual imaging probe where the magnetic cores are combined with fluorescent moiety.
