    Phosphate (PO4–P) sorption characteristics were determined in alpine soils from four European mountain ranges (the Tatra Mountains, Slovakia and Poland; the Alps, Austria; the Pyrenees, Spain and France; and the Rila Mountains, Bulgaria). Concentrations of Al oxohydroxides, determined as oxalate extractable Al (Alo), were the dominant parameter affecting the soil´s ability to adsorb PO4–P. A simple model, based only on Alo and pH explained 74% of the sorption maxima variability. Soils with similar concentrations of aluminum and iron oxides were able to more effectively retain phosphate in more acidic areas than in areas with higher soil pH.
