New sources on the Prague-based printer Johann Ferdinand Nepomuk Schönfeld (1755-1821) form the basis of an analysis of the paradigm change that revolutionized publishing in the Austrian territories around 1780. Schönfeld's singular ascent allows us to draw conclusions on the profound effects of the lifting of the system of privileges introduced unter Maria Theresa and the liberalisation of the book market by Joseph II on the entire literary social system. Aggressively and efficiently entrepreneurial, Schönfeld was highly successful in the first half of the 1780s thanks to his far-ranging contacts, 'disloyal' behaviour and ruthless tactics at commission auctions. Starting with one Viennese branch, he rose to become one of the most controversial book publishers in the imperial Austrian territories, also in the field of belles-lettres.
