The goal of this paper is to show two basic types of modelling approaches used to study complex food webs, discuss their pros and cons, and suggest some avenues for further, systematic research in this exciting and relatively novel branch of ecological science. We also present a specific model of each type. Using the top-down approach, we study effects of simultaneous operation of several stabilizing mechanisms, showing, somewhat surprisingly, that they might suppress one another. Through the bottom-up approach, we examine an extent to which food webs formed via speciation vs. invasion events differ, showing that they differ in size, structure as well as propensity to collapse.
