The first part of the article answers questions: 1) Is competition or monopoly a market structure conductive for innovation and growth? 2)Do foreign investors play any significant role in the transfer of technology and growth effects? In the second part the role of the state in R&D, problems related to R&D subsidies, and links to competition policy are discussed.
