This paper deals with the sensitivity of silica optical fibers coated with xerogel layers to toluene and benzene in gaseous phase and in solutions. Methyl-group-doped polysiloxane xerogel prepared by the sol-gel method are used. The sensitivity of fibers is determined from changes of the output power from the fiber excited by an inclined colimated beam and brought into contact with gaseous or dissolved hydrocarbons. The detection limits of about 9 mg/l have been found for toluene in agueous solutions.
