A new optical fiber sensor based on surface plasmon resonance and using an optical fiber with an inverted graded-index profile is described. A theoretical analysis of light propagation and experiments to determine the dependence of the transmitted power on the refractive index of the surrounding medium were carried out. It has been shown both theoretically and experimentally that the sensor exhibits high sensitivity in a refractive-index range from 13.33 to 1.39.
