This special issue of Optical and Quantum Electronics collects contributions that were presented at the International Workshop on Optical Waveguide Theory and Numerical Modelling held in Prague on 26 and 27 May 2000. These workshops have already become important events in the calender of the guided-wave optics community. The Prague workshop, already the eight in the series (1992 Teupitz, 1993 Vevey, 1994 Siena, 1995 Rosendal, 1997 Enschede, 1998 Hagen, 1999 Saint Etienne), was hosted in newly reconstructed premises of the Masaryk College of the Czech Technical University in Prague-Dejvice.
