The first application of a fibre amplifier in a LDA system is presented. Using a Nd-doped fiber amplifier as optical preamplifier in a conventional 1064 nm laser Doppler anemometer (LDA), a small signal gain of 30 dB and 35 dB SNR enhancement of the LDA radiation was achieved.
