The topographic and flow data indicate that the leukocyte rolling is by the cluster of L-selection receptors along the surface when the tethers may be created while the step motion is by the space between the clusters along the surface when no bond with the ligand molecules can be formed. This interpretation of the leukocyte motion suggests that the localization of L-selectin receptors to clusters is probably precisely from that reason in order to make leukocyte motion less dependent on the acting fluid forces.
