Male and female intercommunication in mammals does not only occur at the level of the sperm and the egg but also between the sperm and the somatic cells that sperm meet during their journey through the female genital tract. After reaching oviduct, sperm are trapped in the isthmic region of the oviduct by carbohydrate-mediated binding to the oviductal mucosa. It is supposed that proteins of the sperm surface bind to carbohydrate moiety on the surface of the mucosa. Saccharide specificity of this interaction varies among species. In the pig, epithelial cells expose oligomannosyl residues that might serve as ligand for sperm surface proteins.
