The S factor for the direct capture reaction .sub.7 Be(p,ç).sub.8 B can be found at astrophysical energies from the asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC`s) which provide the normalization of the tails of the overlap functions for .sub.8B .sub.7Be + p. Peripheral transfer reactions offer a technique to determine these ANC`s. Using this technique,the .sub.10 B(.sub.7 Be, .sub.8 B).sub.9 Be and .sub.14 N(.sub.7 Be, .sub.8B).sub.13 C reactions have been used to measure the asymptotic normalization coefficient for .sub.7 Be(p,ç).sub.8 B. These results provide an in direct determination of S.sup.17(0). Analysis of the existing .sub.9Be(p,ç).sub.10B experimental data within the framework of the R-matrix methods demonstrates that experimentally measured ANC`s can provide a reasonable determination of direct radiative capture rates.
