Due to meson exchange currents (MEC) the time-like component of the weak axial vector current is enhanced with respectto the impulse approximation. This Enhancement can be observed in the first-forbidden beta decay matrix element fç.sup.5.For several transitions in the lead region the MEC-enhancement factor îMEC of this matrix element was determined by measuring the beta asymmetry and combining this with the known experimental ft value. To obtain the beta asymmetry on-line low-temperature nuclear orientation measurements were performedboth at the ISOLDE (CERN) and the LISOL (Louvain-la-Neuve) mass separator facilities. The lead region nuclei under studyare .sub.205 Hg, .sub.207 Tl and .sub.213 Bi.
